Exploring Math, Food, and Nature in Baltimore

This May, we led a hands-on workshop at the Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen at Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School, where a passionate group of educators explored creative ways to incorporate garden-based learning into their classrooms.

In the kitchen, participants made naan bread while learning about breads from around the world and how cooking activities can connect students to culture, community, and hands-on learning.

Out in the garden, upper-grade educators explored seven different ways to reinforce math concepts through garden-based activities. During an “Each One Teach One” share-out, teams learned activities and then taught them to the larger group.

Lower-grade educators focused on engaging young learners through sensory play and exploration, from making mud pies in a new garden sink play area to going on shape hunts and creating math pattern garden bracelets.

To wrap up the day, everyone created floral print buddy bookmarks using flowers and plants from the garden.

We loved connecting with such creative and passionate educators and sharing ideas for meaningful, hands-on learning experiences!
