Honey Seed Snacks

Honey Seed Snacks

Remember to thank the bees when you enjoy these honey and seed treats! Lots of fun for little hands to shape these into balls… or moon shapes… or worms!

Ages 2+, 30+ minutes

Ingredients:

½ cup carob or cocoa powder

½ cup honey

½ cup peanut butter or almond butter

½ cup sunflower seeds

½ cup sesame seeds, plus some to coat each ball

½ cup rolled oats

(if you are out of sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, or oats, you can substitute chia seeds, shredded coconut, puffed rice, or other cereal for any of these)

Steps:

  1. Mix all ingredients together by hand.

  2. Form the batter into bite-sized balls and roll them in sesame seeds.

  3. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a month.

We are all looking for “healthy” treats and ways to celebrate the joys of sweets without the negative sugar load...especially for our kids. These Honey Seed Snacks are a great way to do just that, and have been a Life Lab favorite for as long as anyone can remember. Mixing up a batch is almost as fun as eating the finished product, and kids can easily measure the ingredients, stir them together, and roll out the balls (or worms!) all on their own without much instruction. Also, it is a great “kitchen sink” kind of recipe, meaning you can substitute pretty much everything for what you happen to have on hand. Just use the recipe proportions as a guide, and don’t sweat it if you run out of sunflower seeds or oats...just throw in some coconut, pumpkin seeds or more sesame seeds instead. Also, with so much concern about food allergies these days, we certainly support swapping out the peanut butter for another nut butter or sunbutter (which is what we use at camp). Refrigerating these will firm them up, and make them easier to enjoy in the days, weeks, even a month ahead...if they last that long!
