Seed Spheres

Make spheres out of mud and native flower seeds. Dry them in the sun, and then toss them out to fill an area with native flowers.

Ages 5+. ~30-45 min

Materials:

  • A bowl, pail or bucket you don’t mind getting dirty

  • A trowel

  • A full watering can (or cup of water)

  • A packet of native flower seeds … or any seeds that can be broadcast

  • A baking sheet

  • Used paper, to line the baking sheet

This is a really fun way to repopulate a patch of bare earth with native flower seeds … or whatever seeds you have! First, work together to clear a patch of earth for planting. Choose a spot that gets lots of sun. Next, put a few trowelfuls of soil into a bowl, pail or bucket you don’t mind getting dirty. Add enough water to get a clay-like texture that you can sculpt in your hand. If it is too dry, add more water. If it gets too wet, add more soil. Now sprinkle your seed mix into your mud. Mix thoroughly. Next, roll small spheres of the mud in your hands, each about the size of a gumball. Put paper down on your baking sheet and place your seed spheres on top of the paper. Leave in the sun to dry. Once your Seed Spheres are dry, toss them out over the patch of earth where you want to plant them. Water regularly, and watch them grow!
