Life Lab UCSC Interns Bring Farm to Fork Learning to Life!

October 2025

The Life Lab UCSC Internship Program is in full swing this fall, giving college students hands-on experience in environmental education, food systems, and garden-based learning. Our interns are taking the lead on Farm to Fork Field Trips for local 2nd grade students, putting their training into practice and developing valuable skills in teaching, facilitation, and program leadership.

Through these immersive field trips, interns guide students as they:

  • Explore the 25-acre UCSC Farm and learn how fruits and vegetables are grown organically.

  • Harvest and sample the six plant parts — roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.

  • Investigate apples in the orchard through tastings and cider pressing.

  • Discover the many varieties and uses of corn, including making fresh tortillas.

  • Meet the Life Lab chickens, honey bees, and composting worms.

The internship program gives students the opportunity to develop leadership, teaching, and communication skills, while inspiring the next generation to understand and appreciate where their food comes from.

We’re so grateful to our UCSC interns for sharing their energy, curiosity, and passion with young learners!
